Penn Hills Football Celebrates a Strong 2024 Season
The Penn Hills Varsity Football Team wrapped up a successful 2024 season with a strong 7-5 record and a well-earned spot in the WPIAL playoffs.
As part of the highly competitive Big 56 - Northeast Conference, the team demonstrated resilience, determination, and growth throughout the season, with standout individual performances and unforgettable moments that will be remembered by players, coaches, and fans alike. While their playoff journey ended in a tough 3-24 loss to Upper St. Clair in the District 7 Class 5A Quarterfinals, the 2024 season proved to be a year of significant achievements for the team.
One of the major highlights of the season was Naytel Mitchell's recognition as Play of the Year in the Big 56 - Northeast Conference. Mitchell's impressive performances on offense, along with his leadership throughout the season, were key to the team's success. His well-deserved honor as Player of the Year reflected his hard work, athleticism, and leadership on and off the field.
In addition to his accolade, Naytel Mitchell was also named to the 1st Team All-Conference alongside fellow offensive players Carter Bonner, Martel Palmer, and Camryn Price, recognizing their exceptional contributions to the team's offensive achievements. On defense, Darrell Banks and Donovan Burnett were selected for the 1st Team All-Conference Defense, highlighting their critical roles in anchoring the team's defense throughout the year. Five additional players earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors; Jay'mere Ellis, Derek Selby Jr., Ron Porter, Angelo Baleno, and Gerald Jones, all of whom played vital roles in the team's overall success.
The 2024 season also featured several unforgettable moments, including a dramatic 30-27 victory over Moon Area in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs. This thrilling win showcased the team's resilience and teamwork, propelling them to the next round. Senior Night, which featured a dominant victory over Plum, helped the team secure their playoff spot and provide a memorable send-off for the seniors. The Homecoming, Youth Night, and Teacher/Staff Appreciation celebrations brought the Penn Hills community together, with fans, families, and local supporters cheering on the team throughout the season.
Although their playoff run ended in the quarterfinals, the 2024 Penn Hills Varsity demonstrated significant growth, effort, and achievement. With multiple players earning All-Conference honors and the team continuing to build on its legacy of excellence, the future of Penn Hills football is bright. As the program continues to grow, the 2024 season will be remembered for its athletic achievements, teamwork, and the strong sense of community pride that unites the team and its fans.
