At Penn Hills High School, students have the opportunity to explore culture and self-expression through Hip-Hop Literature & Culture, a course that examines the power of words, rhythm and storytelling within hip-hop.

The course introduces students to the history and evolution of hip-hop, while connecting rap lyrics, spoken word poetry, and hip-hop narratives to broader cultural and social movements. Through the class, students are encouraged to use their own voices and experiences as tools for creativity and communication.

The course challenges students to analyze hip-hop lyrics and literary techniques such as metaphor, imagery, and rhyme while also examining how hip-hop has shaped conversations surrounding race, identity, community and social justice.

In addition to literary analysis, students participate in creative projects designed to help them express themselves in meaningful ways. Projects include analyzing influential hip-hop songs, writing and performing original spoken word or rap pieces, and creating digital mixtapes centered around social issues or themes important to them and their communities.

The course offers students an opportunity to see literature through a modern and culturally relevant lens while developing critical thinking and creative skills. Best of all, no prior experience is required, students are simply encouraged to bring their passion to the classroom.
